11. Robin
if you base that conclusion on the old Batman series with Adam West
and Burt Ward where Batman and Robin “Pow”, “Biff” and “Whacked” their way
through bad guys. Holy lame costumes Batman! That was then, this is now.
The Teen Titans comics turned the character from a sidekick into the
ass-whipping, Bruce Lee-like kung-fu leader of his own team. Then the cartoon
then took it to the next level. Robin, though still an oft-whiny teen, is
undeniably awesome.
10. Silver Surfer
The Silver Surfer is so cool that the T-1000 tried to jack his style. All
silver with the Power Cosmic and a sweet surfboard to boot? How can you
not like a character that rebelled against one of the most powerful
entities in the Universe to save Earth.
9. Captain Marvel (Marvel Comics)
Captain Marvel was my favorite character as a kid. As “Protector of the
Universe” Captain Marvel gained awesome cosmic powers and sweet
energy-shooting Nega-bands. Captain Marvel thwarted the evil Titan Thanos
on numerous occasions and constantly saved the day. I was devastated when
I read the graphic novel “The Death of Captain Marvel”. All that power,
and cancer took him out. Stupid cancer.
8. Venom
The first time I saw Venom on a comic, he looked awesome. His jagged teeth
with that long crazy tongue hanging out made him look hardcore and scary at the
same time. Venom is basically the dark version of Spider-Man, but stronger
and meaner.
7. Wolverine
Everyone loves Wolverine. He is basically the coolest-looking character
ever created. Initially created to give the Hulk a good fight, Wolverine
arguably became even more popular than his foe. Rocking razor-sharp claws,
regeneration abilities, an indestructible skeleton and an attitude like a
honeybadger make Wolverine the badass character who just doesn’t give a
damn.
6. Thanos
Thanos is the ultimate villain: incredibly powerful, evil, and obsessed
with death. Whether it was with the Cosmic Cube or the Infinity Gauntlet,
Thanos is the villain that is always trying to destroy the universe and who
crushes heroes like ants.
5. Hulk
If this list was just based off of big screen awesomeness, Hulk would be
number 1. Every time he stepped on screen in The Avengers, it made my
adrenaline pump. No other character captures pure rage-power and
badassness like the Hulk. The Hulk is always entertaining, and the fact
that he just clobbers everything and anyone in his path makes him a man’s
hero. Hulk is the embodiment of why guys like to just destroy things and
blow shit up.
4. The Joker
My favorite villain. The Joker is an awesome character because, simply put, he is fucking
crazy. There is no great reason for him to do the things he does other
than he is psychotic and wants to. He is the definitive yin to
Batman’s yang. The Joker is wild and unpredicatable,
while Batman is a rational-thinking detective. No other baddie captures
the essence of villainy like the Clown Prince.
3. Spider-Man
“Spider-Man. Spider-Man. Does whatever a spider can…” I love me some
Spider-man. Spidey is a teenage kid with teenage problems. The whole
character is based in realism and does a great job of illustrating what it
would be like trying to balance the dual nature of being a normal person and
a superhero. In the comics, Spidey deals with not only super-villains, but
girlfriends, friends on drugs, and school, all while having a quick wit and
a punchline
2. Batman
I almost put Batman first because he is the most relatable character in
comics. Batman is just a regular guy (well, regular billionaire) who
decided that he was going to take crime out himself. Besides a treasure
trove of tools and gadgets that would make James Bond jealous, he has no
powers – nothing makes him super except his ultimate willpower and
better-than-Sherlock detective skills. Batman is awesome because he is
flawed, just like us.
1. Superman
Superman is the first and best superhero of all-time. The first thing that
comes to mind when you think of a superhero is the man with the “S” on his
chest. Superman stands for every good quality we
want out of our heroes – truth, justice and kick-ass powers. Dude can fly,
has super-strength, is invulnerable, has x-ray vision,
super-hearing, freezing breath and he still manages to always do what is
right, even when it isn’t popular. I remember running around the yard with
my makeshift blanket-cape and my arms out pretending I could fly. Then my
wife told me to knock it off because the neighbors were watching.
